Select the Right Storage

First, you’ll want to select a suitable storage space for your boat. Consider your boat’s size and weather conditions, then finalize your decision.

An indoor storage space is always the best. However, if that isn't feasible, you can store your vessel outside after covering it properly. Select an appropriate lift storage, trailer storage, or dry-stack storage option, depending on the size of your boat and location.

Prepare Your Boat for Storage

Before storing your vessel, drain all the water or flush out the engine to avoid any corrosion. You’ll also want to clean it thoroughly using a marine-grade cleaning solution but remember to remove any belongings you may have kept there. It’s a good idea to add a fuel stabilizer to help prolong the fuel life of your vessel and prevent the carburetor varnish from becoming gummy and the fuel system from getting clogged. Finally, you’ll want to cover your machine to prevent any debris or dirt from accumulating and leading to costly damage.

Check the Electrical System

When storing your boat for a prolonged period, ensure the electrical system is turned off and remove the battery to avoid energy drainage. You can extend the battery life by keeping it charged in a dry location.

Check the Trailer

If you're storing your boat on the trailer, ensure the tires are inflated and protected from sun damage. You’ll also want to strap your boat securely to prevent it from moving or slipping during storage.

Schedule Periodic Visits

Finally, you’ll want to check on your boat during storage to monitor for damage or vandalism. Make sure you move your vessel and trailer to keep the bearings lubricated and don't forget to keep an eye on the boat cover for damage and any water accumulation. If undetected, this can lead to mildew or dry rot.
